Skyrim

Skyrim is the unofficial master of PC game modding. With its vast array of mods, you can add anything from high-resolution textures and higher-quality assets to new quests and entire quest lines that take hours to complete. The game also has tons of modpacks, which include multiple mods in one easy-to-install package. Some of my favorite mods include SkyUI, A Quality World Map, and the A Quality World Map mod. I usually download a select number of visual mods along with these mods and call it a day until I’m near the end of the main quest. Skyrim’s modding potential is astounding, with the community creating multiple combat overhaul mods that can be combined with HUD and gameplay mods to transform the game into a completely new game combat-wise. The best place to find Skyrim mods is on Nexus Mods, but you can also check out the game’s Steam Workshop page.

Minecraft

Minecraft is, along with Skyrim, the poster child of the PC modding scene. Mods improve the game so much that some of our resident authors can’t even play the game without certain mods. If you’re playing Minecraft without mods, you’re missing out on tons of quality content that can turn the already excellent game into a time sink of epic proportions. The main source of Minecraft mods is CurseForge, and you can find a vast array of mods on the game’s Steam Workshop page.

Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and Fallout New Vegas

Modern-era Fallout games, being Bethesda RPGs, are made from the ground up to support a wide variety of mods. If you’re playing Fallout 3, Fallout 4, or Fallout New Vegas without mods, you’re missing out on tons of quality content that can turn the already excellent game into a time sink of epic proportions. The best place to find mods for these games is on Nexus Mods.

Stardew Valley

Vanilla Stardew Valley has a smorgasbord of content in the first place, and ConcernedApe has added boatloads of content to the game over the years. Still, you cannot get the ultimate Stardew Valley experience without modding it. Some of my favorite mods include Time Master, Lookup Anything, and the Mail Services Mod. The best place to find Stardew Valley mods is on the game’s Nexus Mods page.

Baldur’s Gate 3

Talking about a smorgasbord of content, vanilla Baldur’s Gate 3 is a humongous and superb turn-based RPG. Mods can improve your Baldur’s Gate 3 experience dramatically, with mods such as WASD Character Movement, ImpUI, Party Limit Begone, and the 5e Spells mod. The best place to find mods for Baldur’s Gate 3 is on the game’s Nexus Mods page.

The Sims 3 and The Sims 4

While some games, such as Baldur’s Gate 3, are phenomenal even without mods, other games, such as The Sims 3 and The Sims 4, offer an objectively inferior experience if you decide to play them without mods. Mods can improve the game, with mods such as The Sims 3 GPU Add-on Support, the Smooth Patch mod, and various smaller patches and mods that fix various issues present in the game. The best place to find mods for The Sims 3 and The Sims 4 is on the game’s Mod The Sims website and the game’s Nexus Mods page.

Assetto Corsa

Assetto Corsa is another game where mods are a must. Mods add loads of new cars and tracks, turning it into a must-play title for every sim racing fan. The best place to find mods for Assetto Corsa is on websites such as Overtake, Race Sim Studio, Virtual Racing Cars, and United Racing Design.

Cities: Skylines

Cities: Skylines 2 is still quite buggy and anything but stable. Mods can improve the game, with mods such as the game’s Steam Workshop page and various smaller mods available on Nexus Mods. The best place to find mods for Cities: Skylines is on the game’s Steam Workshop page and Nexus Mods.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance I and II

Kingdom Come: Deliverance I and II is a great vanilla game, with a unique saving system and simulation mechanics that make some mods a must. Mods can improve the game, with mods such as Unlimited Saving II, Instant Herb Picking II, and the Rich Merchants mod. The best place to find mods for Kingdom Come: Deliverance I and II is on Nexus Mods.

RimWorld

RimWorld is the ultimate sandbox colony sim. Mods can improve the game, with mods such as Camera+, Follow Me, RimHUD, Allow Tool, Common Sense, Wall Light, and Donโ€™t Block Door. The best place to find mods for RimWorld is on the game’s Steam Workshop page and Nexus Mods.

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is a brilliant sandbox RPG with strategy elements. Mods can improve the game, with mods such as Diplomacy, Bannerlord Tweaks, Realistic Battle Mod, Detailed Character Creation, and Calradia Expanded. The best place to find mods for Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is on the game’s Nexus Mods page and ModDB.

The Total War Series

Total War games are great, but aside from the Total War: Warhammer series, all Total War games take place in historically accurate, real-world locations. Mods can improve the game, with mods such as the Third Age – Total War total conversion modification for Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms and various smaller mods available on ModDB and Nexus Mods. The best place to find mods for The Total War Series is on ModDB and Nexus Mods.

Terraria

Terraria is a 2D version of Minecraft, and it can only get better with mods. Mods can add quality-of-life (QoL) mods and content mods, with mods such as Shadows of Abaddon, Stars Above, Calamity, Spirit, and the Spooky mod. The two main sources of Terraria mods are CurseForge and the game’s Steam Workshop page.

XCOM: Enemy Within and XCOM 2

XCOM: Enemy Within is an expansion for the 2012 XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and it’s a must-have to get the best XCOM: Enemy Unknown experience. Mods can improve the game, with mods such as the Long War mod and the Mini Mods package. The best place to find mods for XCOM: Enemy Within and XCOM 2 is on the game’s Steam Workshop page.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl is the best example of what total conversion modifications are capable of. Mods can improve the game, with mods such as Radiophobia 3, Old Good Stalker Evolution, Old Good Stalker Remastered, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Anomaly. The best place to find mods for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl is on ModDB and Nexus Mods.
