New Pokémon Games Shatter Sales Records

I know it’s probably going to come as a big surprise when I tell you that the most recent Pokémon games, Pokémon Black and Pokémon White, have shattered sales records, according to Nintendo USA.  The games went on sale only a few days ago, March 6, and have already brought in big numbers.  Day one sales came out to over a million units (1.08 million, to be exact), destroying the previous Pokémon record of 780,000 set by the Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version games in April 2007.

Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo of America’s senior director of Corporate Communications, reflected on the huge sales:

“Longtime Pokémon fans are attracted to the new Pokémon, new battle systems and a new region to explore, while newcomers enjoy the ability to jump in and have fun right away. These sales numbers illustrate the continued strength of the Nintendo DS family of systems. Already established as the nation’s best-selling video game platform of all time, the installed base of more than 47 million makes it the ideal hand-held for developers to reach a huge gaming-focused target audience.”

With 150 completely new Pokémon to discover, the games really are an ideal option for newcomers or those who have lapsed from the series.  I know I personally never played the games; the originals came out right when I was “out growing” (what I considered) “kiddie” games, and then it kind of seemed too late to jump in.  However, this new batch seems like the perfect time to dip my toes in the Pokémon water, and apparently I am not the only one.

Look forward to our review in the next few weeks, and until then, check out http://www.pokemonblackwhite.com for more information about Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version.
