Rummy games have been a staple of Indian culture for decades, played by generations with a rich cultural significance. Gullapalli, a Telugu-speaking resident of Andhra Pradesh, is a perfect example of this cultural relevance. Growing up, he was captivated by the card game’s social aspect and the competitive spirit it embodied. In 2005, when Nokia’s Snake was the pinnacle of mobile gaming, and the iPhone was still on the horizon, Solitaire became the most played computer game in history. This digital diversion, with its green background and bouncing cards, was instantly recognisable. However, amidst this digital landscape, Gullapalli noticed that his friends were engaged in a different activity – a game of rummy. The question that sparked a multi-billion-dollar industry was simple: “Why are you not playing rummy on the computer?” This inquiry set Gullapalli on a journey to explore the possibility of creating a digital platform for rummy. His motivation was rooted in his love for the game and his desire to make it accessible to a broader audience. Gullapalli’s earliest memory of playing rummy dates back to his 10-year-old train journey with his family. In this setting, he witnessed how rummy transcended mere entertainment and became a social ritual, played during festivals like Diwali and Sankranti. This experience reinforced his perception of rummy as a game with deep cultural significance. Upon returning to India in 2006, Gullapalli began to conceptualise his business model. With a master’s degree in Business Systems from Middlesex University, he envisioned a company that would sell rummy games on CD-ROMs. Despite modest ambitions, Gullapalli’s vision was ambitious, with plans to make a significant impact in the gaming industry. The company’s initial capital came from unexpected sources – `5 lakh from his mother’s savings and another `5 lakh from his London earnings. With this funding, Gullapalli set up his startup in a 150-square-foot room under a water tank in his apartment building. This humble beginning was a far cry from the company’s eventual success. Despite the limited resources, Gullapalli assembled a small team, including Shiva P (now VP of technology business platform) and Ranadeep Tujala (enterprise architect). Together, they worked tirelessly to develop a platform that would cater to the growing demand for rummy games. A significant turning point came when Gullapalli joined Party Gaming (now Entain) as a product manager in 2007-2008. This experience exposed him to the intricacies of online gaming, including online poker. Gullapalli’s involvement in Party Gaming played a crucial role in shaping his vision for a digital rummy platform. Gullapalli’s entrepreneurial journey gained momentum when he left Party Gaming to focus on his startup full-time. He employed a clever tactic to conceal his decision from his mother – by telling her that he had lost his job due to layoffs. This ruse allowed him to maintain his secrecy while navigating the complex landscape of online gaming. The company launched its real-money gaming platform in June 2009, after securing legal opinion. The initial revenue was modest, with the company earning around `8,000 on day one. However, within a year, the business became cash-positive, paving the way for growth and reinvestment. In 2010, Matrix Partners invested in Gullapalli’s company, providing a much-needed injection of capital and structure. This investment marked a significant milestone in the company’s development, solidifying its position as a major player in the gaming industry. Despite the challenges, Gullapalli’s comfort with risk was evident from his family background. His father and grandfather were involved in the film distribution business, an industry known for its high-stakes decision-making. This exposure to risk had a lasting impact on Gullapalli’s entrepreneurial approach. Throughout the journey, Gullapalli has faced numerous legal challenges, including attempts to restrict real-money gaming in various states. The company has consistently argued that rummy’s classification as a game of skill should protect it under Article 19(1)(g) of the Indian Constitution. In 2017, Telangana banned online rummy, forcing the company to temporarily relocate to Bengaluru. However, the company has continued to fight against these restrictions, using its platform to advocate for the rights of online gamers. The smartphone revolution, which began around 2013-2014, marked a significant turning point for Gullapalli’s company. This technological shift opened up new markets and expanded the user base exponentially. Today, the company boasts over 55 million users and 600 employees, operating multiple verticals in real-money gaming. Gullapalli’s success story is a testament to his perseverance, innovative thinking, and willingness to take risks. From humble beginnings to becoming a leading player in the gaming industry, Gullapalli’s journey is an inspiring tale of entrepreneurial spirit and determination.
